The Weekly Countdown

I find myself counting things at least once a week. It usually happens on my crazier days at home with my kids when more than one of anything seems to happen in quick succession. Take today for example …

Five major meltdowns, four cups of strong coffee, three chickens loose in the backyard, two more bites “Just two more bites for Mommy!” And one workout. Wait, that last part hasn’t happened yet. All of that chaos and no time or energy for just one workout. Isn’t chasing chickens a workout?

Being a parent is a workout! However, it’s the kind that tends to wear us down, not make us stronger. We can definitely count the calories we burn while grocery shopping, wrestling kids into their clothes, running after pets, dishing up dinner, etc. But that stuff is stressful. It elevates our cortisol levels, gets our hearts pumping for a brief amount of time, but it’s not enough.

We need to get our heart rates up and keep them up for at least 30 minutes day. One minute, thirty times a day when you’re in panic mode doesn’t count. Exercise should be soothing, relaxing. We should feel our bodies and minds unwind during movement and deep breathing. In other words, exercise should be more than walking around the office or keeping track of crazy kids.
