WEEKLY CHALLENGE:Β
Do a total of 5 Fit2B videos of any length or difficulty and consider including the featured routine which will have you “stepping back in time” to the glory days of step aerobics in the 80’s and 90’s … Did you know that step aerobics was the very first type of group fitness that I experienced and then began to teach? Yep, I was only 16 when I took my first step class and fell in love with it. I got certified as a group fitness instructor at age 18 and began teaching right away! Step is still one of my favorite types of cardio!Β
The following workouts are all the rest of our step workouts. Remember, you aren’t obligated to do these parallel routines. The following list offers suggestions that are similar yet different to the one above, while still fitting this week’s theme. If all you do is the weekly workout video, then you are successfully doing “52 For You” this year. These are just ideas:
Moving Thought:Β Step aerobics was actually really hard for me to learn. I had been raised by parents who saw dancing as sinful, so moving to a beat was foreign to me. I had never owned any workout clothes beyond my volleyball uniform which was the only organized sport I’d ever tried up until that point. My step class teacher, Kamala Kohlmeier, was also the track & field coach at my high school, though, and she saw something in me. She encouraged me to stick with it and to also try out for the track & field team where every student had to try every event at the start of each season. I had never ran in my life, I couldn’t jump worth beans, I tripped over all the hurdles. I was decent at shot-put. I never “won,” but I learned a lot and unknowingly began building the foundation of my love for fitness and movement! I wasn’t good at doing step or shot-put, but I enjoyed them, and I had a teacher who kept encouraging me… and look where I am now!! Take a step back: Imagine where you’ll be if you keep doing what you love, even if you aren’t amazing at it!Β
